Report of the State Agency for Religious Issues for 2018-2019

The State Agency for Religious Issues held a presentation of the report for 2018-2019 and the photo album "Faith is an Act of Freedom".

The following guests were invited to the presentation: the representatives of religious organizations in Georgia - Apostolic Orthodox Church of Georgia, Administration of Muslims of All Georgia, Spiritual Council of Yazidis, Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Orthodox Church in Georgia, Union of Jews of Georgia, Apostolic Administration of the Caucasus, Evangelical-Lutheran Church in Georgia, Evangelical-Protestant Church in Georgia, Evangelical Faith Church of Georgia, Union of Evangelical Christian Baptist Church of Georgia, International Baptist Church of Tbilisi,  members of the Parliament and the Government of Georgia, representatives of international organizations, diplomatic corps and media.

Zaza Vashakmadze, Chairman of the State Agency for Religious Issues presented the report to the guests who spoke about the current situation in the country regarding freedom of religion and the main activities implemented by the Agency to promote freedom of religion and a tolerant environment in the country. He paid special attention to the occupied territories, where the rights of indigenous people, Georgians to freedom of religion, expression and freedom of movement were violated and to the tendency of appropriation, arbitrarily alteration, damage and destruction of the Georgian churches.

The chairman noted the Agency’s cooperation between the legislative and executive authorities, training on "Secularism and Religious Neutrality" for the representatives of regional administrations, city halls, councils and Gamgeobas, MIA, university students, and media representatives within the Action Plan of the Government of Georgia on the Protection of Human Rights. He also talked about the activities of the Interreligious Council, financial and other assistance provided by the state to religious organizations, about the conferences held in the format of "Interreligious Dialogue for Peace" ("The Role of Religions in Georgia - 1918 - 2018" and "Religions on the Georgia's Way to European Integration").

Zaza Vashakmadze touched upon the projects implemented during the reporting period, such as: maps of Religious and Functioning Cult Buildings of Georgia – showing data on religious confessions and the number of active cult buildings at both regional and municipal levels; "State language for the Clergy", aiming at teaching the state language to the clergymen of religious minorities; the photo album “Religions in Georgia”, featuring major cult buildings of most religious denominations, also providing biographies of religious leaders; exhibition "Religions in Georgia" organized with the National Museum, where religious communities presented religious literature, garments and ritual inventory; publications on Freedom of Religion, relationship between religions and the state etc.

After the speech of the Chairman of the Agency, the guests were addressed by the First Deputy Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia, Giorgi Volski, the Head of the Prime Minister's Office, Giorgi Sakhokia, the Prime Minister's Special Representative in Relations with Russia, Zurab Abashidze, the Honorable Citizen of Tbilisi, the journalist Jamlet Khukhashvili who gave  positive assessments to the work of the Agency and noted that the activities of the Agency play an important role in state religious policy, regulating relations between the state and religious organizations, and establishing a tolerant religious environment in the country.
