Meeting with Director of the Religious and Ethnic Minorities Department of Poland

In the scope of the visit to the Republic of Poland, Zaza Vashakmadze, Chairman of the State Agency for Religions Issues, met with Director of the Religious and Ethnic Minorities Department of the Polish Ministry of Internal Affairs, Andrzej Rudlitsky and his deputy Caesar Malissek.

The meeting was attended by David Davitashvili, Senior Specialist of the agency’s Legal Maintenance Office, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Georgia to the Republic of Poland - Ilia Darchiashvili and his adviser - Natalia Topchishvili.

At the meeting Zaza Vashakmadze informed the host side about the activities of the State Agency for Religious Issues, the Religious Policy of the Georgian State and the steps taken into this direction.

The Chairman of the agency was interested in Polish experience and challenges in the field of freedom of religion, as well as in the rules and forms of registration of the religious organizations, religious education, construction of religious buildings and funding principles.

According to the Director of the Religious and Ethnic Minorities Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Andrzej Rudlitski, in Poland the guarantee of freedom of religion is a record in the constitution. There are 181 registered religious organizations in Poland and 15 of them are recognized religions with whom the state is interacting through individual laws. In Poland, a religious organization needs to have at least 2 years working experience and signature of one hundred citizens for the registration.

According to Andrzej Rudlitsk, the procedure for the return of property seized during the socialist regime in Poland has been developed and the commissions studying these issues continue to operate. There is a State insurance for the clergy. Religious education at schools is voluntary.

At the end of the meeting a desire for future cooperation was expressed.
