international conference Positive Side of Religious Freedom

On the 6th  and 7th  June, in Bucharest, the State Secretariat of Religious Issues of Romania organized an international conference "Positive Side of Religious Freedom: How can the state get involved in a relationship with religious organizations". The conference was attended by the representatives of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), European Commission, and the delegation of the following countries: Romania, Finland, Slovakia, Serbia, Sweden, France, Estonia, Norway, Georgia and the United States.

The delegation of the State Agency for Religions Issues took part in the event. Giorgi Ukleba, the deputy chairman of the State Agency for Religious Issues, underlined the situation in the occupied territories of Georgia and noted that all international law and norms were violated in the occupied regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali. Ethnic Georgians, Orthodox Christians have no right or it is very limited to freedom of movement, freedom of expression, confession and prayer and the right ro education in the native language. He also spoke about the reforms carried out by the State of Georgia in the direction of freedom of religion, in particular, about the funding of religious organizations, property restitution and regarding the training and projects implemented within the framework of the Human Rights Governmental Action Plan.

"Georgia has a centuries-old tradition of relationships with different ethnic and religious groups. The tradition continues even today. That is why, realizing the difficulties and challenges of the modern world, we have a proposal - to organize annual workshops for the type of organizations like us to share experiences with each other and to prevent the existing challenges, "said Giorgi Ukleba.
