Visit of the delegation of the State Agency For Religions Issues to Romania continues. The Deputy Chairman of the agency, Giorgi Ukleba met with Rafael Shafer, the main Rabbi of the Romanian Jewish Community Federation. Giorgi Ukleba congratulated the main Rabine on the Shavuot celebration, referred to the history of Georgian-Jewish, centuries-old relationship and noted its unique importance for both nations.

Romania's main rabbi was interested in current approaches towards religions in Georgia, including the Jewish community. The deputy chairperson of the Religious Agency noted that the equality of all religions in Georgia and protection of their rights, together with the country's constitution, is determined also by the tradition of tolerance existing in our country.  As for the Jewish community - there are 19 synagogues in Georgia, all the synagogues that have been seized in the Soviet period have already been returned to the Jewish community. In addition, the Jewish Community, along with the other four religious confessions, takes symbolic and partial compensation for the damage caused during the Soviet totalitarian regime.

Romania's main Rabbi after getting information about Jewish cemeteries and schools in Georgia noted that the Jewish community in Romania mainly consists of elderly people, do not even have a school. And Georgia can be proud of being a tolerant country and he named the functioning of a Jewish school. He also pointed out that the state body working on religious issues has a very complex and challenging task because it is very difficult to develop such a neutral position that all the religious organizations operating in the country to be satisfied. He wished success to the State Agency For Religious Issues, while to Georgia - to join the European Union soon.
