An international conference on "Religion and the Rule of Law" started its work with the initiative and organization of the "Sheraton Grand Tbilisi Metekhi Palace", the State Agency for Religious Issues and the "Institute of Global Engagement", a non-governmental organization of the United States of America.
The first session of the conference was opened and the guests were welcomed by the chairman of the State Agency for Religious Issues, Zaza Vashakmadze, and the vice president of the Institute of Global Engagement (IGE), James Chen. The speakers emphasized the relevance and importance of the topic for the modern world.
The first deputy chairman of the Parliament of Georgia, Giorgi Volski, and the chairman of the Human Rights Protection and Civil Integration Committee of the Parliament of Georgia, Mikheil Sarjveladze, welcomed the conference participants and wished them a successful start.
American expert Nadine Maenza addressed the participants of the conference with the report on the topic - Global overview of religious freedom.
The chairman of the State Agency for Religious Issues, Zaza Vashakmadze, spoke on the topic - threats to freedom of religion in the territories occupied by Russia. He emphasized the dire situation of the Georgian population remaining in the territories of Georgia occupied by Russia, the deplorable condition of the religious buildings of various religious denominations, especially the Orthodox churches, and the attempts to erase Georgian traces in Abkhazia and Tskhinvali region.
The topic - international human rights related to freedom of religion and belief was spoken by Professor Elizabeth Clark (USA), Professor of Law on Freedom of Religion and National Security Dr. Eric Jensen (USA), at the Global Network of the International Religious Freedom Round Table - Greg Mitchell (USA).
Then the leaders of the religious organizations in Georgia took the floor and spoke about the current situation in Georgia in terms of freedom of religion.
