Meeting with President of Israel

Within the two-day visit to Georgia the President of Israel, Reuven Rivlin went to Tbilisi Great Synagogue and met with the chairman of the State Agency for Religious Issues. The meeting was attended by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Georgia to Israel Paata kalandadze, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Israel to Georgia Shabtai Tsur and the chairman of the board of Tbilisi Great Synagogue Merab Chanchalashvili.

The president of Israel thanked the hosts and talked about centuries-old, historical friendship between the Georgian and Jewish people. The president also noted about the most important contribution of the Georgian Jews to the promotion of Jewish culture and educational activities. Reuven Rivlin recalled the letter sent by the 18 Georgian Jews to the UN in which they asked for the right to return home; Alia from Georgia in the period of 70-s, that in turn gave rise to a great Alia –  a breakthrough of the “Iron Curtain” from all the regions of the former Soviet Union.

At the end of the speech, the president emphasized the importance of the government’s attitude towards the Jewish people and noted that Georgia is the only country where anti-Semitic sentiments have never existed. As for the visit to Georgia – according to the president, it will deepen friendly and working relations between the two nations in the future.
