The State Agency for Religious Issues held a presentation of the religious maps at the Courtyard Marriott which was attended by the representatives of the Parliament of Georgia, Government of Georgia, diplomatic corps and the leaders of different religious organizations.

Two options of the religious maps were presented – regional and district, in which the quantitative and percentage of the religious composition of the population of Georgia was reflected.

As Zaza Vashakmadze, the chairman of the State Agency for Religious Issues noted such kind of project has not been created during the history of Georgia.

“The religious map has been created for the first time in Georgia. The agency worked in coordination with the National Statistics Office for about a year and a half, accordingly the product was done. The project was implemented in two variants which implies the creation of a religious map on a regional level and existence of the database and the second at the level of the districts and cities. In addition, the agency created an electronic version that has already been uploaded on our site. What’s most interesting, is the creation of a map of religious buildings. The project will promote the raise of religious awareness in Georgia, mutual communication between different religions and of course it will benefit tourism development”, - said Zaza Vashakmadze.

According to the data of the National Statistics Office of Georgia marked on the map, there are: 3 097 573 Orthodox people, 398 677 Muslims, 109 041 Armenians, 19 195 Catholics, 12 395 Jehovah’s Witnesses, 8 591 Yezidis and 1 417 Jews. In addition, there was a category “other” (66 915) in the questionnaire which meant the following categories: confession is not specified, refusal to answer, none and any other small confessions.
