International Day for Tolerance has been celebrated since 1995, at the initiative of UNESCO. Its aim is to raise public awareness of the dangers of intolerance, extremism and discrimination and to establish an atmosphere of mutual respect and understanding.

In connection with the Day for Tolerance, the State Agency for Religious Issues has established a tradition, according to which one of the religious communities in Georgia hosts the leaders and parishioners of other religious organizations.

On November 16, 2016, religious communities were hosted by the Georgian Orthodox Church, in 2017 - by the Georgian Jewish community, in 2018 - by the Apostolic Administration of the Caucasus, and in 2019 - by the  Muslim community of Georgia.
