Delegation of the State Agency for Religious Issues Met with the Hungarian Commissioner for Fundamental Rights

The Chairman of the State Agency for Religious Issues, Zaza Vashakmadze, and members of the delegation, during their visit to Hungary, met with the Commissioner for Fundamental Rights Dr. Akos Kozma.

At the meeting, the Chairman of the Agency emphasized the strategic partnership between Georgia and Hungary and their cooperation on common interests, noting that the Georgian and Hungarian people have similar values, including respect for their own country and family.

Zaza Vashakmadze introduced Akos Kozma to the steps taken by the State of Georgia towards religious denominations, financial assistance to religions,  including partial compensation for the damage caused during the Soviet totalitarian regime and the return of cult buildings. The Chairman of the Agency also noted the crucial role that members of the Interreligious Council and religious leaders played in strengthening a tolerant environment in society.

Zaza Vashakmadze spoke about the facts of violations of fundamental human rights and freedoms, including freedom of religion and belief, and the facts of ethnic and religious discrimination in the occupied territories of Georgia. He presented the Commissioner for Fundamental Rights with the Agency’s publication “Occupied Heritage”, reflecting the dire situation in the occupied regions. In response, Dr. Akos Kozma stated that Georgia should always have hope in Hungary and it would always support Georgia and its leaders in the process of European integration.

The meeting was attended by the Director-General of the Police Complaints of Hungary, Dr. Domonkos Wildner, the Director-General for Security Affairs, Dr. Bernadett Bodo, the Deputy Secretary-General, Dr. Gábor Schmidt, the Advisor for International Affairs, Balazs Antal Nagy, the First Secretary of the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Georgia to Hungary, Tamar Chkhaidze, the Head of the Legal Maintenance Office of the Agency, Davit Davitashvili, and the Agency's lawyer, Aleksandre Shekiladze.
