Today the chairman of the State Agency for Religious Issues Zaza Vashakmadze visited a synagogue in Gori and together with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Israel, Shabtai Tsur attended the prayer.

After the prayer, Zaza Vashakmadze condemned the fact of robbery of the synagogue and said the state would do its best to investigate this incident. According to him, it makes no difference whether it is a synagogue, mosque or a church as no one should dare to rob and misuse a place of worship. The chairman of the agency expressed his gratitude towards the Jewish community for their kindliness and hoped that the incident wouldn’t affect a centuries-old friendship between Georgians and Jews.

The Ambassador of Israel thanked Zaza Vashakmadze and noted that the Jewish community had been cared for by the state which was expressed in allocating financial assistance and transferring of the synagogues for the last two years. In accordance with the Ambassador the incident is the exception in the background of deep relations between Georgians and Jews and this fact will be investigated by the law-enforcers.
