International day of Tolerance 2019

Today, on the occasion of the International Day for Tolerance, the Muslim Community of Georgia organized an event for various Religious organizations. The establishment of the International Day for Tolerance in 2016 was initiated by the State Agency for Religious Issues. First host was Georgian Patriarchate, then the Jewish community in 2017, and the Catholic Church in 2018.

The meeting was attended by the Orthodox Autocephalous Orthodox Church, Muslim and Jewish Communities, Armenian Apostolic Orthodox Church, Catholic Church, Yezidi Community, Evangelical Lutheran Church, Evangelical Protestant Church, of the International Baptist Church, Gospel Baptist Christian Union. The event was also attended by the cultural attaché of the Iranian Embassy.

Zaza Vashakmadze, the head of the State Agency for Religious Issues, welcomed the guests and congratulated them on the Day of Tolerance. According to him, today's gathering once again demonstrates the tolerant environment that has historically formed among religious organizations in our country. He said that Georgia is a tolerant country with diversity of religions, which is an important capital for peaceful and democratic development.

Religious leaders gathered at Muslim community office, underlined the role of the State Agency for Religious Issues in relations between religious organizations the strengthening of mutual respect and tolerance, love and friendship between the confessions is an important achievement of the state.

At the end of the event, certificates were awarded to religious organizations and the State Agency for Religious Issues for promoting a tolerant environment in Georgia.

Since 1995, on the UNESCO initiative, November 16 has been marked as International Day for Tolerance. Its purpose is to raise public awareness of the dangers of intolerance, extremism and discrimination and to promote mutual respect and understanding.
